The game features both single-player and multiplayer modes; the campaign is played through the multiplayer mode without connecting to the Internet.[20] Players will be notified of updates and their availability via a pending updates menu if they do not connect to the Internet There is at least one update available every week that will detail new changes, fixes and improvements to The Division. Development of the game was led by Ubisoft Massive, who had previously developed the "Assassin's Creed" and "Far Cry" series. The studio also developed "" (which was released in 2013) and "Steep". The film director Zack Snyder has not worked on the games but is credited as a creative consultant for the project because of his work on other Ubisoft franchises, such as "Far Cry", and because of his work on "Man of Steel".[21] The game was announced at E3 2011 and involved a multi-player online experience with four different factions working against each other. In the Beta Test, Ubisoft confirmed that the game will have an open world to explore and a "dynamic storyline". The story follows a police officer who is sent on a mission to extract the president of the United States from New York City. The game features a new “Dynamic” storyline, to bring players’ attention together, and provide a richer experience by grouping players to complete tasks at critical times. The player can choose from four different main characters during gameplay.
